Follow reaction after Olivier Giroud becomes France's record goalscorer as they beat Poland in the last 16 of the World Cup

France and Poland squared off in the knockout stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Poland and France both got multiple shots off early in the match. France beat Poland 3-1 in a record-smashing World Cup last-16 clash on Sunday that saw Olivier Giroud become France's outright all-time top goalscorer.

The victory sets up a quarter-final clash with England on Saturday.

Giroud, 36, scored France's second goal of the game in the 44th minute, moving him one ahead of Thierry Henry on 52 goals for his country.

Kylian Mbappe scored twice in the second half to seal the win for France, who will now face England in the quarter-finals on Saturday.

Poland got off to a bright start and had the better of the early chances, with Robert Lewandowski hitting the post in the 38th minute.

But France took the lead just before half-time when Mbappe played in Giroud, who finished calmly past Wojciech Szczesny.

Mbappe doubled France's lead in the 74th minute with a stunning solo effort, before adding his second and France's third in the 90th minute.

Poland pulled one back in the 90th minute when Lewandowski scored from the penalty spot, but it was too little too late for the Poles.

The win means that France are now through to the quarter-finals of the World Cup, where they will face England.
